Ketan D. Bhirud Sworn in as EEOC Legal Counsel

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced today that Ketan D. Bhirud has been sworn in as legal counsel, overseeing internal and external policy for the nation's leading civil rights agency.

"I am delighted that Ketan Bhirud will bring his background and talents to the EEOC," said EEOC Chair Janet Dhillon. "His rich experience in both the public and private sectors will benefit this agency as we continue to combat employment discrimination."

The EEOC's Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) serves as the principal advisor to the Commission on enforcement matters. OLC drafts regulations, guidance and technical assistance documents, conducts outreach and education efforts, and coordinates on behalf of EEOC on all federal issues affecting equal employment opportunity. OLC also represents the Commission in defensive litigation and manages the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) program for the agency.

"I am excited to be joining the EEOC as its legal counsel," said Mr. Bhirud. "I am honored that Chair Dhillon trusts me to help the EEOC advance its mission. I look forward to working with everyone at the EEOC to prevent and remedy employment discrimination."

Bhirud attended the University of California, Los Angeles as an undergraduate and the University of Minnesota Law School. After law school, he joined Lionel Sawyer & Collins in Las Vegas for almost a decade. Immediately prior to joining the EEOC, Bhirud served in Nevada's Office of Attorney General as chief litigation counsel, and before that as general counsel to the Attorney General of Nevada. He brings to the EEOC his public and private sector experience, specializing in regulatory and litigation matters, as well as years of appellate practice, administrative law and state and federal constitutional law.

The EEOC advances opportunity in the workplace by enforcing federal laws prohibiting employment discrimination. More information is available at www.eeoc.gov. Stay connected with the latest EEOC news by subscribing to our email updates.
