Meeting of July 1, 2015 - EEOC at 50: Progress and Continuing Challenges in Eradicating Employment Discrimination
Dr. Donald Tomaskovic-Devey has studied equal employment opportunity in workplaces for the last thirty years. Some of his most important recent work has utilized EEO-1 private sector surveys to document long term trends in workplace equal opportunity. He is currently working with the EEOC and the scholarly community to create a network of scholars and scholarship to inform the work of the EEOC and other federal agencies charged with promoting equal opportunity in employment. He is the author of Gender and Racial Inequality at Work: The Causes and Consequences of Job Segregation (1993, Cornell University Press) and Documenting Desegregation: Racial and Gender Segregation in Private Sector Employment since the Civil Rights Act (2012, Russell Sage Foundation). Recent publications have appeared in the American Journal of Sociology, American Sociological Review, Socio-Economic Review, and Social Currents. He has had projects on workplace inequalities in the US, Japan, Australia, Sweden, and Germany and he is a leader in the social sciences movement to utilize administrative data to answer social science and policy questions. His current projects are funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, the Russell Sage Foundation, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and the Institute for New Economic Thinking. He is currently Professor of Sociology and past-Chair of the Sociology Department at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He previously held the rank of Profession at North Carolina State University and has held visiting Professorships at Queensland University of Technology, Australia, Stockholm University, Sweden, Bielefeld University, Germany and Science Po, France. He has also served as an expert witness in a number of high profile class action discrimination law suits.
